St Mary's Churchyard is the responsibility of the Rector and PCC of St George's, Whyke. Please contact the Parish Office if you have any questions about:

a burial or interment of ashes;

instalment a memorial headstone on a grave plot;

reserving a grave space

any maintenance or health & safety queries or concerns.
Friends of St Mary's Churchyard
The Friends are a group of volunteers whose purpose is to care for, celebrate and enhance St Mary's Churchyard in Whyke, Chichester.
We aim to restore and maintain this historic place of beauty as:
-
a resource for the whole community;
-
a nature reserve in the city, with over 100 species of plants; a refuge for birds, bats, butterflies, beetles and many other creatures;
-
a storehouse of local and family history; - a place to sit quietly, rest and reflect;
-
a space to remember and celebrate those we have known and loved.
Please do get in touch if you would like to be a 'friend' to the churchyard. There are many ways to get involved such as:

Clearing vegetation in selected overgrown areas
-
Mowing the paths and strimming other areas
-
Clearing headstones of ivy
-
Restoring masonry and fencing
-
Recording wildlife
-
Installing boxes for birds, bats etc.

Adopting a grave to care for and researching the lives of individuals buried there
-
Creating a photographic record
-
Attending talks and social events focused on local history and wildlife
-
Helping to develop educational resources for others to use.and enjoy
